Life is often a collection of moments—some challenging, some joyful, and some deeply reflective. In this episode of "The Hero's Journey with Dr. D," I share a weekend filled with meaningful encounters that reminded me of the significance of rest, teamwork, and the value of sharing our gifts with others. From guiding my son through the importance of recharging to supporting a friend during a time of loss, these experiences emphasize how we can navigate life with resilience and purpose. Let’s dive into the lessons!
Rest is Essential: A Lesson from My Son 🛌
This weekend, I faced a parenting moment that highlighted the critical need for rest. My son had participated in a football team lock-in, an event designed for camaraderie and fundraising. However, the lack of sleep left him disoriented and emotionally drained the next morning. Recognizing his state, I decided to let him sleep in for a few extra hours before school.
Why? Because I understood that a tired mind accomplishes little. A well-rested individual, however, can function effectively and make better decisions. As I told my son, "Nobody ever wins a Super Bowl by themselves." Just like a team depends on each member knowing their role, our own effectiveness depends on nurturing our well-being. Sometimes, a short rest or a change in pace can make a world of difference.
The Importance of Teamwork: "When One Wins, All Win" 🤝
During the lock-in, the concept of teamwork came to life. I often remind my son that a team isn’t about one person’s success but about everyone working together toward a common goal. Football—or life—requires every player to know their role and execute it well. The same applies to families, friendships, and workplaces.
Whether it’s supporting a teammate on the field or stepping in to help a loved one, teamwork fosters a sense of unity. It’s not just about individual wins but about lifting each other up. As I always say, "When one wins, all win."
Sharing Gifts to Support Others 🎵
Another profound moment from my weekend came when a dear friend asked me to sing at her mother’s celebration of life. I chose a song written for me years ago, one that was deeply appropriate for the occasion. Seeing how it touched her family, especially her young nieces and nephews, was a powerful reminder of the value of sharing our talents with others.
We often underestimate the impact we can have on others. As I reflected, "If you have a gift or a word and you don’t share it, you’re cheating others—and yourself—of the rewards of connection and compassion." Helping others is what truly lasts, and it’s in these moments of giving that we leave a lasting impression.
The Family You Choose vs. The Family You Have 💕
This weekend also reminded me of the unique relationships we form in life. While blood ties are important, the family we choose through friendships can often provide an equal or greater sense of support and belonging. These chosen relationships require effort and intention, and that makes them incredibly meaningful.
As I’ve said before, "Sometimes the water is thicker than the blood." The people we choose to have in our lives can shape us in profound ways, providing a foundation of love, trust, and encouragement.
